Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

A theoretical form of AI that would possess the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks at a level equal to or exceeding human capabilities. AGI would demonstrate cognitive abilities comparable to human intelligence across diverse domains.

Unlike narrow AI, which excels at specific tasks, AGI would possess general problem-solving abilities transferable across domains without requiring specialised training for each new task. AGI remains largely theoretical, with significant technological, conceptual, and ethical challenges to overcome before it could be realised. Debates continue about whether AGI is achievable and what form it might take.

Example

A hypothetical AI system that could seamlessly switch between designing buildings, writing legal briefs, diagnosing medical conditions, and composing music—all with professional-level competence.
